The Inside Story

Employer Booked for Encouraging Child Labor After Maid Throws Toddler from 4th Floor in Byculla, Mumbai

In a shocking turn of events, the employer of a 13-year-old domestic help, who had allegedly flung her employer's toddler from the fourth floor of their apartment house in Byculla, Mumbai, has been booked for encouraging child labor. The maid was arrested the day after the incident, which was reportedly triggered by the employer's wife scolding her for breaking a glass plate. The child, Rehan, survived the fall and is recuperating in the neonatal ICU of the Prince Ali Khan Hospital in Byculla.

The incident highlights the issue of child labor in India, which continues to be a major problem despite the existence of laws prohibiting the employment of minors. The employer, a builder who runs a construction business in Satara, has been booked under the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act and the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act. Police are also questioning the woman who helped find the maid employment in the Khakra household.
