Crime Patrol: Man held for honour killing in Uttar Pradesh (Episode 76 on 14 Jan 2012)

The Inside Story

Man Arrested for Honour Killing in Mainpuri, Uttar Pradesh

In a shocking case of honour killing, a 50-year-old man named Baburam, along with his brother-in-law and a friend, shot dead his 24-year-old daughter in Piliyani village, Mainpuri district, Uttar Pradesh, in July. The victim was killed over her love affair with a youth from the same village. The accused then dumped her body on the railway tracks in Farrukhabad district to make it seem like an accident.

The police began investigating the case after the victim's body was recovered in July. The accused tried to cover up their crime by giving it the appearance of an accident. However, the post-mortem report confirmed that the victim had bullet injuries, leading to suspicion. The police arrested Baburam and his friend Radhey Shyam from Mainpuri on Monday. The whereabouts of the brother-in-law, Ram Bhajan, are yet to be traced.

The heinous crime highlights the regressive mindset and patriarchal attitudes prevalent in certain sections of Indian society. It is essential to address the root causes of honour killings and create awareness to prevent them from happening in the first place. The police's swift action in arresting the accused is commendable, and they must ensure that the culprits face the full forceof the law. The incident serves as a grim reminder that love and relationships still face societal and familial opposition in many parts of India.
