The Inside Story

Man allegedly strangled to death for having food with Dalits in Jaunpur, UP

Shocking news emerged from Kuruthuwa village in Jaunpur district, Uttar Pradesh, where a 65-year-old man, Paras Nath Patel, was allegedly strangled to death by members of his own community for having food at a feast organised by a Dalit family. The incident took place on Wednesday last week, and a case of murder has been registered against seven people.

Paras Nath, who belonged to the backward “kurmi” community, had defied the community’s decision not to attend the wedding ceremony of a girl at the dalit family's residence. The “kurmi” community considered the dalits as “untouchables” and had decided not to have food with them. Paras Nath and his family, however, attended the ceremony and had food with the dalits, which enraged the “kurmi” community.

The “kurmi” community held a “panchayat” the next day, where they wanted to expel Paras Nath from the community for defying their diktat. During the meeting, some members of the panchayat allegedly strangled Paras Nath with a towel, killing him on the spot. The culprits are currently absconding. This incident highlights the deep-rooted caste system prevalent in many parts of India and the urgent need to eradicate it.
