The Inside Story

Friendship Takes a Dramatic Turn in Ahmedabad, Gujarat

A man in Ahmedabad helped his friend elope with his girlfriend and even ran away with the girl himself, putting her up in a hotel to shield the real boyfriend from suspicion. The dramatic bluff was spurred by love and friendship and was busted by Gandhinagar police officials. Riddhi Patel, an 18-year-old resident of Heerawadi in Bapunagar, was reported missing by her father on Friday. He received a call from a man who identified himself as Amjad Khan Pathan and claimed to be holding Riddhi captive and demanding Rs. 5 lakh for her release. Patel did not believe him and filed a complaint with Gandhinagar police.

Investigators formed five teams, including one from Ahmedabad crime branch, and worked day and night to find Riddhi. They secured conclusive proof from technical surveillance that she was with someone. They kept watch on a bus coming from Patan to Ambikanagar and apprehended Ajay Mali, a youth from Bapunagar, who was accompanying Riddhi. Riddhi was unaware of her own abduction, and investigators discovered that the plot was hatched by Riddhi's lover, Jagdish Yadav, a 25-year-old resident of Heerawadi.

Yadav had urged Riddhi to elope with him, but he feared that if they both went missing at the same time, the police might get suspicious. So Yadav entrusted his friend Ajay with the responsibility of creating a ruse. Ajay picked up Riddhi and went to Nadiad on Friday afternoon from Ajol. Yadav called Riddhi's father and demanded Rs. 5 lakh, planning to elope with Riddhi with the money. However, their plans were foiled, and both Yadav and Mali were apprehended by the police.
