The Inside Story

Teenage girl from West Bengal forced into prostitution in Mumbai

Mona (name changed), a 16-year-old girl from South Gopal Chandi area in West Bengal, was forced into prostitution by her boyfriend after she fell in love with him through missed calls on her mobile phone. The boyfriend, identified as Arabali alias Asgar Ashraf Mulla, 23, lured her to Mumbai, where she was raped by about 16 people on several occasions at different places, according to the police.

Mona repeatedly received missed calls from an unknown number over a couple of days. After she returned the calls with a missed call, Mulla identified himself and the two developed a friendship. On November 9, Mulla proposed to Mona and asked her to come to Barasat railway station in West Bengal. She left home saying she was going to visit a friend and waited for hours at the station. When Mulla finally arrived, he took her to Sialda and then to Mumbai, where he introduced her to Meena, who runs a prostitution racket.

The police raided a building in Dongri on November 18 after receiving a tip-off and apprehended Mona, Meena, and Mulla. The victim narrated her ordeal to the police and was sent to the Dongri children's home. The police are investigating if Mulla had conned other girls in a similar way and forced them into prostitution. The incident highlights the need for better awareness and protection for vulnerable individuals, especially minors, in our society.
