Crime Patrol: Diamond thief walks into web honeytrap (Episode 159 on 24 Sep 2012)

Conman falls into honeytrap after stealing diamonds in Mumbai

A 24-year-old man was recently arrested in Mumbai for forgery, theft, and cheating after allegedly stealing diamonds worth Rs 6 lakh from his employer. Karan Patel had been working as a diamond sorter for Satish Shah's jewellery shop for the past four months. Shah had filed a complaint against Patel last month after he disappeared with the diamonds on the pretext of going to the restroom. During the investigation, it was revealed that Patel had provided a fake address and was quite active on Facebook.

The police then came up with a plan to create a false profile of a good-looking girl and sent an invite to Patel, hoping that he would fall for the honeytrap. Patel immediately accepted the invitation and even sent her a chat invite. The police exchanged messages with Patel for a few days before asking him to meet the girl at a restaurant in Opera House. Patel was trapped and arrested the moment he got close to her. The police said they were yet to recover the stolen diamonds from Patel.

Conmen can also have their weaknesses and can be outsmarted. Patel's active web life led him to fall into a honeytrap set up by the police. He was remanded in police custody till June 15 and will face charges of forgery, theft, and cheating. The incident highlights the importance of being cautious when dealing with unknown individuals and verifying their credentials to avoid falling prey to fraudsters.
