Shaitaan - A Criminal Mind: Journalist Soumya Viswanathan murder case: Accused visited mortuary to track inquiry (Episode 27 on 30th March 2013)

The Inside Story

Journalist's Murder Case Unfolds in Delhi

Four men were arrested on Monday for the murder of journalist Soumya Viswanathan on September 30th last year in Delhi. The accused were so unnerved by the media attention given to the case that they posed as journalists to track the investigation's progress. The four visited the AIIMS Trauma Centre where the journalist's body was kept to find out if any clues had been found that could lead to them. According to police sources, the four men were drunk when they committed the murder and only realised the next day the magnitude of the crime they had committed. They were frightened by the media attention and went into hiding. One of the accused, Amit Kumar Shukla, who confessed to shooting Viswanathan, fled to Mumbai and did menial jobs to avoid getting caught. Shukla returned to Delhi eight days before his arrest. The other accused, Ravi Kapoor, changed his residence soon after the murder. He stayed at Sarita Vihar but later shifted to Madangir in south Delhi under a false identity.

The police confirmed that the four men had visited the mortuary at the Trauma Centre to investigate if any clues had been found. The accused, Ravi Kapoor, posing as a journalist, was unaware that the case had snowballed into a major issue, and his actions put him and his accomplices at risk.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) HGS Dhaliwal, who is investigating the case, said that the media focus had frightened the seasoned criminals, and they disbanded. The gang had planned another robbery after regrouping, but they were arrested before they could carry out the plan.

The accused have been charged with murder, robbery, and violation of the Arms Act.
