Nurse Arrested for Stealing from Patient's Apartment

In a case of deception, a 22-year-old school dropout, who had been working as a nurse for two years using forged documents, was apprehended on Thursday for stealing Rs. 2.5 lakh from a patient's apartment in South Mumbai. The accused, identified as Arpita Hande, had falsified the documents of a 40-year-old nurse to secure employment at a nursing bureau, according to the police.

The theft occurred in July when Hande stole Rs. 2.5 lakh in cash and silver coins valued at Rs. 6,000 from the apartment of an 80-year-old woman on Peddar Road. Soon after the incident, the woman left the city. Pankaj Zhaveri, the complainant, reported the theft to the police in July and informed them about the nurse who stole cash from his mother's residence. Zhaveri stated that he had hired a nurse from 'Devki Nurses Bureau' in Sion to care for his ailing, elderly mother who lived alone.

During the investigation, it was discovered that Hande had been working under the name of Manisha Jadhav at the agency for the past two years. She had provided a false address and someone else's contact number. The police confirmed the authenticity of Jadhav's credentials with the Maharashtra Nursing Council and found that she was a 40-year-old nurse from Satara. It was revealed that Hande had photocopied Jadhav's documents to secure employment at the nursing agency two years ago.

Hande was arrested from Kolhapur, where she resided in a women's hostel. She was charged with cheating, theft, and forgery under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. On Friday, she was presented before a metropolitan court and remanded to judicial custody until October 21.
