Crime Patrol: Engineering Graduate Kills Her Grandmother (Episode 600 on 20 November, 2015)

The Inside Story

Chennai, Tamil Nadu

Granddaughter arrested for murdering 76-year-old grandmother

Police have arrested a 21-year-old woman, S Kanimozhi, for the murder of her 76-year-old grandmother, Mangalam, at their house in Porur. Kanimozhi had initially claimed that a masked robber had killed her grandmother, but later confessed to stabbing her with an hacksaw. The murder was reportedly committed after a quarrel broke out between the two, as Mangalam opposed Kanimozhi's relationship with her boyfriend and reprimanded her for talking with him late at night.

Kanimozhi had completed her BE (ECE) graduation from a government college in Kumbakonam, where she was staying with her mother. She was in a relationship with a person since her college days, but her grandmother wanted her to marry a relative, leading to frequent arguments. On the night of the murder, Kanimozhi was again talking with her boyfriend on the phone when Mangalam caught her and scolded her. In a fit of rage, Kanimozhi stabbed her grandmother twice in the stomach and chest with an hacksaw.

Mangalam started bleeding and was in pain for a few hours before passing away. Kanimozhi then lied to a neighbour who came to check on hearing cries and told him that her grandmother was unwell and that her father was on the way to take her to hospital. Kanimozhi's father, who was a nursing assistant and the only other person residing in the house, believed her story of a masked robber breaking in and killing Mangalam until Kanimozhi confessed to the crime.
