Teenage Dalit girl killed by family in Muzaffarnagar
In a suspected case of honour killing, a 19-year-old Dalit girl named Pratibha was allegedly killed by her father and brother in Malira village, Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh. The reason for the murder was reportedly Pratibha's relationship with a youth, which was not approved by the family. On Tuesday morning, her body was found in the fields, with her head bashed in with bricks.
Initially, the family tried to pass it off as a murder by an unknown person, but the police suspected their role and investigated the case. The police arrested Pratibha's father Jagpal and brother Pradeep, who confessed to the crime. Jagpal said that he did it for his "honour" as his daughter had threatened to elope if the family did not accept their relationship. This is the second such case to be reported from the district within a week.
The incident highlights the persistent problem of honour killing in the country, where people are killed for marrying outside their caste or religion or for choosing their own partner. It is a grave violation of human rights, and strict action needs to be taken against those who commit such crimes to send a strong message to society.
