Police Register Case Against Suspect In Suicide Abetment And Extortion Racket

The Borivli police have registered a case against an unknown person for abetment of suicide, putting a person in fear of injury to commit extortion and obscene acts and songs. Officials have recovered the account number of the suspect who had blackmailed the victim posing as a girl's brother. The cops believe that it could be a racket, as similar incidents have been reported before. Victim Rasam, who committed suicide on the railway tracks in Dadar, had recently been asked to pay Rs 8,000, which he could not arrange, and thus decided to end his life.

In another similar incident from May 2013, a city-based engineer's Facebook friend asked him to strip on webcam. The woman, who claimed to be a model from Karnataka, uploaded the video to YouTube and asked for Rs 10,000 to take it down. After depositing the money, the embarrassed engineer approached the Bhandup police when she demanded another Rs 5,000. The police suspect a male accomplice's involvement in the case.

The police are trying to trace the IP address used to set up the Facebook account of Rasam's friend, Priyanka. They believe that one of the gang members might have set up the account posing as a girl. Inspector Dharnendra Kamble of Borivli police station said that such incidents have been occurring for some time, and they suspect it to be a racket.
