Crime Patrol: Youth held for girl's kidnap, rape (Dial 100 Episode 275 on 26th Oct, 2016)

The police have arrested Rohit Mandal, a 22-year-old man, on charges of kidnapping and raping a 14-year-old girl in Bandra, Mumbai. The girl's mother alleged that her daughter had been kidnapped and raped previously by another young man, but the police closed the case due to a lack of evidence. If the police had investigated the first case properly, the second incident would not have happened, she said.

On May 3, the girl was kidnapped for the first time, and the woman lodged a missing person complaint with the Bandra police. She later learned that a boy from the neighbourhood was also missing. The police refused to register a complaint, and the woman filed a writ petition in the Bombay High Court, which directed the police to investigate the matter. However, the police eventually closed the case, alleging a lack of evidence.

On November 7, the victim went missing again, and the woman learned that another neighbourhood boy, Mandal, had allegedly kidnapped her. Mandal was booked for kidnapping and rape after the woman lodged a complaint. Advocates Suhail Sheriff and Sana Baugwala, representing the mother, claimed that the second incident would not have occurred if the police had investigated the first case properly. The police also registered a case against political activist Tauffik Zahir Khan for allegedly issuing threats to ensure that a complaint was not lodged.
